Modrić left baffled after a Serie A match: “This has never happened to me in my career”

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri shared an unusual moment from a recent match in which Luka Modrić was tightly man‑marked from start to finish.
Croatia’s captain has faced countless opponents and playing styles, but what happened against Genoa genuinely surprised him.

Allegri explained that Modrić was followed everywhere on the pitch by a single opponent:
“I joked with Luka after the match, and he told me nothing like that had ever happened to him in his career. At one point he even asked the guy: ‘Sorry, can you give me a moment?’ The reply was: ‘No, I was told to follow you everywhere,’” Allegri said with a smile.

No easy moments in Serie A
The Italian coach highlighted how tactically demanding Serie A is, a league where improvisation is rare:
“Italian football requires patience, but quality always comes through.”

Milan drew 1–1 with Fiorentina in the latest round — their second straight setback in the title race. Modrić watched that match from the bench, a decision that, in hindsight, didn’t work out for Allegri.

“We’re second in the table, which is still a good position. We need to get back to winning quickly, but we also have to stay realistic — we changed 55 percent of the squad,” Allegri noted.

Milan currently trail Inter by two points and have played one match more. Everyone at the club understands that without Modrić’s control and experience, the battle for the top will be far more difficult.
