FIFA Gives Green Light to GFF Talent Coach Application
The Gambia Football Federation has received FIFA approval for the appointment of a FIFA Talent Coach. This approval marks a major step toward launching a FIFA‑supported Talent Academy under the Talent Development Scheme. The decision strengthens GFF’s long‑term plan to improve youth development across the country.
GFF Leadership Pushes for Stronger Football Development
The approval follows the vision of GFF president Lamin Kaba Bajo and his Executive Committee. They want to maximize FIFA’s Global Football Development programs. Their focus includes the High Performance Department and the Talent Development Scheme. This strategy led the Technical Department to request the Talent Coach program. FIFA’s positive response confirms the federation’s direction and ambition.
Michael Spencer Begins a Ten‑Day Assessment Visit
FIFA appointed Michael Spencer as the Talent Coach for the project. Spencer is a British coach with academy experience at Charlton Athletic. He has arrived in The Gambia for a ten‑day discovery visit. His mission includes gathering information and meeting key stakeholders. He will assess the environment and prepare for the academy’s launch.
Spencer is joined by Ali Mwebe, the FIFA Regional Technical Consultant and TDS Lead for The Gambia. Later, Lyson Zulu, a High Performance Specialist from Zambia, will join the team. Their presence shows FIFA’s strong commitment to the project.
Inside the FIFA Talent Development Scheme
The Talent Development Scheme is a global FIFA initiative led by Arsène Wenger. The program aims to create high‑quality academies that develop young players with international potential. It focuses on giving every talent a fair chance. The scheme supports nationwide talent identification for boys and girls. It also increases contact time with qualified coaches for players aged 12 to 16. The program helps develop elite local coaches and builds strong training environments.
Gambia Set to Join CAF’s First Wave of FIFA Academies
The GFF Talent Academy is expected to be fully operational by May 2026. When completed, The Gambia will join the first 13 CAF Member Associations to activate the FIFA Academy program. This achievement places the country among Africa’s early adopters of FIFA’s long‑term development model. It also signals a new era for Gambian youth football.
