CAF general secretary resignes as AFCON fallout deepens

CAF general secretary resignes during a turbulent moment for African football as the fallout from the AFCON final continues to intensify. His departure adds another layer of uncertainty to a landscape already shaken by Senegal’s disputed victory over Morocco.

CAF general secretary resignes during leadership turbulence

Senegal won 1–0 after extra time through Pape Gueye’s powerful strike. The match descended into controversy when Ismaila Sarr’s stoppage‑time header was ruled out for a foul on Achraf Hakimi. Morocco received a penalty moments later after Brahim Díaz went down. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest. Sadio Mané convinced them to return after a lengthy delay. Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal held their lead.

CAF later declared Senegal had forfeited the match by leaving the field, awarding Morocco a 3–0 administrative victory. Senegal responded by parading the trophy in Paris and accused CAF of undermining sporting integrity. CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed the case now sits with the Court of Arbitration for Sport and promised to respect the final ruling.

Mosengo‑Omba steps aside amid scrutiny

Veron Mosengo‑Omba resigned while insisting he cleared his name after facing allegations of toxic leadership and overstaying retirement age. He said he stepped down to pursue personal projects. An internal investigation found no wrongdoing. Motsepe praised his contributions and highlighted his role in CAF’s administrative growth. CAF competitions director Samson Adamu assumed the interim position.

CAF outlines new governance measures

CAF introduced reforms aimed at strengthening trust in referees, VAR operators, and disciplinary bodies. Motsepe emphasised equal treatment for all member associations and highlighted the need to professionalise referees. He stressed the importance of transparency and fairness as CAF works to restore confidence.

Senegal remain champions on the pitch, while Morocco hold the title administratively as CAS prepares its ruling.
