Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr Demands Release of Detained Senegal Supporters

A Historic Win Overshadowed

Senegal lifted their second Africa Cup of Nations title after beating Morocco 1-0 in Rabat. The victory should have sparked national celebration. Instead, violent clashes in the stands overshadowed the achievement. Security forces confronted Senegalese fans, and the match halted for 17 minutes.

Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr missed the final due to illness. Yet he stepped into the spotlight one month later with a strong message.

Sarr Condemns Ongoing Detentions

Sarr posted on X to demand the release of 18 detained Senegal supporters. Moroccan authorities arrested them after the final. Sarr argued that their only “crime” was supporting their team with passion. His statement resonated across Senegal, where many view the detentions as unjust.

The supporters face another court appearance on Thursday. Their case continues to strain relations between the two football federations.

CAF Issues Heavy Sanctions

CAF reviewed the chaotic scenes and issued significant penalties. Senegal’s FA received £445,000 in fines. Coach Pape Thiaw earned a five‑match suspension for ordering his players off the pitch after a controversial penalty decision.

Morocco’s FA received £228,000 for misconduct by players, staff, and ball boys. Officials accused ball boys of repeatedly trying to take Edouard Mendy’s towel. CAF also punished Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari for unsporting behaviour.

The Conversation Shifts

Pape Gueye’s extra‑time goal secured Senegal’s title. Yet the focus remains on the detained Senegal supporters. Sarr’s public intervention increases pressure on Moroccan authorities and keeps the issue in global view.
