Scottland FC coach Norman Mapeza doubled down on his trust in former Kaizer Chiefs stars Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat as the club prepares to defend its Premier Soccer League crown. The champions enter the 2026 campaign with momentum and experience, and Mapeza believes his senior players will shape the team’s identity this season.
Scottland lean on Musona and Billiat for title defence
Scottland claimed the 2025 league title, the first in the club’s short history since forming in 2023. The triumph also secured a place in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League, marking a major milestone for the ambitious side. Their preparations continued with a dominant 5-0 win over FC Dynamos in the Castle Lager Super Challenge Cup, where both Musona and Billiat scored.
Billiat arrived from Yadah FC in February 2025, while Musona returned to Zimbabwe in June after leaving Saudi outfit Al Kholood. Their immediate impact strengthened Scottland’s attack and added leadership to a squad still growing into its identity.
Mapeza praises leadership of former Chiefs duo
Mapeza highlighted the value of working with players who understand his methods. He previously coached Musona and Billiat in different environments, and that familiarity now benefits Scottland’s dressing room.
“The players have been performing exceptionally well,” Mapeza said. “When you look at senior figures like Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiat, and Walter Musona, I feel fortunate because I have worked with them before.”
He added that their understanding of his expectations helps him manage the squad more effectively. Their influence extends beyond goals, shaping standards and guiding younger teammates through the demands of a title defence.
New season brings new expectations
Mapeza replaced Tonderai Ndiraya ahead of the new campaign and now finalises preparations for the league opener. His previous experience with Chippa United (chippaunitedfc.co.za in Bing) in South Africa sharpened his tactical approach, and he aims to blend structure with the creativity of his senior attackers.
Scottland’s rise has been rapid, but the club now faces the pressure of defending a championship while competing in continental football. Mapeza believes the squad’s maturity, combined with the leadership of Musona and Billiat, gives them the tools to handle the challenge.
Scottland title defence anchored by experience
Scottland enter the 2026 season with confidence, depth, and a clear identity. Musona and Billiat bring star power and experience, while Mapeza provides stability and tactical clarity. Their combination could push Scottland to another historic season as they chase domestic success and prepare for their CAF Champions League debut.
