LA Galaxy Target Casemiro as New Designated Player
Casemiro’s decision to leave Manchester United at the end of the season has opened the door to a potential MLS switch. The Brazilian midfielder confirmed in January that he would not sign a new contract, ending his Old Trafford spell after several turbulent seasons.
Reports in England claim that LA Galaxy have intensified their interest. The club views Casemiro as a possible Designated Player, a status once held by David Beckham and later Zlatan Ibrahimović. The DP rule would allow the Galaxy to offer wages outside MLS salary restrictions.
The Galaxy already use all three DP slots, but the long‑term injury to Riqui Puig changes their plans. Puig will miss the entire 2026 season after sitting out 2025 with a similar knee issue. Without him, the Galaxy collapsed to a franchise‑low seven wins. The club now needs a new leader in midfield.
Manchester United Face Their Own Midfield Crisis
United also lack depth in midfield. Reports suggest the club might have considered extending Casemiro’s deal if not for his age and salary. His weekly wage, reportedly £375,000, has drawn criticism from senior figures. Co‑owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe publicly questioned the value of several high‑earning players in 2025.
Jamie Carragher also doubted Casemiro earlier in the season, claiming the midfielder could no longer compete at the highest level. Casemiro responded with strong performances, including a dominant display against Fulham where he scored and assisted before being substituted. Carragher later admitted his assessment was wrong.
United Prepare for Expensive Midfield Rebuild
United continue to monitor Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton. All three would require significant investment after the club spent nothing in January. United’s collapse against Fulham after Casemiro left the pitch highlighted the lack of reliable alternatives.
Leon Goretzka emerges as a cost‑effective option once his Bayern Munich contract expires. The German midfielder offers physicality, leadership and box‑to‑box energy. Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller also appears on United’s list. Stiller creates chances from deep while Atakan Karazor handles the defensive workload beside him.
If Casemiro maintains his current level, replacing him will challenge any incoming midfielder.
